João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco was the nom-de-plume of Amatus Lusitanus, or Amato Lusitano, the Portuguese physician who trained at the University of Salamanca, was persecuted by the Inquisiiton, and retired from his professional life in the Jewish community in Theddaloniki, Greece.
The text includes references to such American medical plants such as Peruvian balsam, and spices spices such as cinnamon and pepper.
