The field book documents the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. for Arctic Operations, summer 1946. Pages are numbered. It is divided into sections: journal (1 - 226), bird lists, bird notes, mammal notes. The journal entries are headed with dated and location. They describe travel from Washington DC (time of day, mode of travel, destinations, routes), daily life aboard the vessel, observations of staff, description of operations (2 phases: maneuvers in Baffin Sea and establish weather stations at Thule, Greenland and Winter Harbor, Melville Island, Canadian Arctic), observations of flora and fauna (from ship including birds and mammals with type, sex, quantity, and time of day), lists of nautical terminology, terrain, notes on and observations glaciers and ice slabs (with sketches), weather, geology, and list of photographs taken. Sometimes location information includes latitude and longitude. Includes maps, some hand drawn; list of staff per vessel; sketches of wildlife. Bird lists are organized by date and location and list sightings per time of day. Bird and mammal notes list observations per type with date and locations.
