Notes
The bound volume documents the specimen collecting of Edgar Mearns, 1896 - 1902. Pages are numbered (1-288). The volume is organized by type of specimen collected. There is a table of contents with page numbers at the beginning of the volume. It lists: mammals, birds, reptiles, batrachians, fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, plants. Sections are not chronological order. Entries vary in content, including a combination of specimen number, name, locality (combination of town, state, landmark e.g. Arlington Cemetery, or mountain name) and sometimes elevation, sex, date, types of measurements, and remarks. Remarks include information about specimen preparation, additional measurements, collecting location, state of growth (plants), and stomach contents. Some specimens were prepared by Louis Mearns. There is a list of "birds noted in the neighborhoods" and notes on reptiles listing specimen number, name, specimen preparation, location, and name if given to someone. Localities include District of Columbia, Montana, Texas, Virginia, Wyoming, including Yellowstone National Park and Mammoth Hot Springs. On page 81 is a narrative about letters from his family describing wildlife in their backyard during his absence during "Spanish War".
