The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in Arizona, California, Kentucky, June 19 - October 1, 1929. Entries are dated and detail travel and collecting. Entries begin with descriptions of time at Havasupai Canyon (in Grand Canyon National Park / Havasupai Indian Reservation), Park locations visited, descriptions of flora and fauna including life zones and altitude, weather, temperature, photographs taken, mammal and bird specimens collected (genus or binomial) including bats, meetings with Indian agents, lists and descriptions of birds in Havasupai canyon (abundance and habitat), terrain, and travel details (mode, accommodations, destinations). June through August cover time around Grand Canyon. Much of the later entries discuss field work in caves frequented by bats. Locations include San Francisco mountains; Mammoth Cave, Onyx Cave, Hidden River Cave, Kentucky.
